Short answer: a typical adult takes about 2,000 to 2,500 steps to walk a mile and 1,600 to 2,000 steps to run one. The exact count comes down to your stride, which depends on height, speed and terrain.
Average steps per mile
For an adult of average height (around 5’6″), walking a mile takes about 2,313 steps and running takes about 1,846. A kilometer is roughly 1,250 to 1,500 steps at walking pace.

Steps in a mile by height
| Height | Steps per mile walking | Steps per mile running |
|---|---|---|
| 5’0″ | 2,545 | 2,031 |
| 5’4″ | 2,386 | 1,904 |
| 5’8″ | 2,245 | 1,792 |
| 6’0″ | 2,120 | 1,692 |
| 6’4″ | 2,009 | 1,603 |

How speed changes the count
As you speed up, your stride lengthens a little. The ratios below are approximate, but they show why a brisk walk uses fewer steps per mile than a stroll.
| Pace | Approx. stride ratio | Steps per mile (5’8″) |
|---|---|---|
| Slow stroll (2 mph) | 39.0% of height | 2,389 |
| Normal walk (3 mph) | 41.5% of height | 2,245 |
| Brisk walk (3.5 mph) | 43.0% of height | 2,167 |
| Fast walk (4 mph) | 44.5% of height | 2,094 |
Walking versus running
Running stride is about 25% longer than walking stride because of the flight phase between footfalls. That is why the same runner might log 1,750 steps per mile but 2,250 when walking.
Other factors
- Terrain: hills, sand and trails shorten stride.
- Fatigue: tired legs take shorter steps.
- Age and mobility: stride tends to shorten with age or injury.
- Footwear and load: heavy boots or backpacks change gait.
How to find your exact number
- Measure out a known distance such as a quarter-mile track lap.
- Walk it at your normal pace, counting steps or reading your tracker.
- Multiply by four to estimate steps per mile.

Why steps per mile is useful
It lets you translate a step goal into distance: 10,000 steps at 2,250 per mile is 4.4 miles. It helps check tracker accuracy, plan walks and compare walking with running. See how far 10,000 steps goes for a worked example.

Why does my watch show a different number?
Your device’s stride setting, your pace and your terrain all differ from average values. Calibrate it with a measured walk.
