Steps to Miles Calculator - Steps to Miles Formula

The core formula: miles = (steps × stride length in feet) ÷ 5,280. Everything else on this page is a variation of that one idea.

Formula cheat sheet

Goal Formula
Steps to miles (steps × stride in feet) ÷ 5,280
Steps to kilometers miles × 1.60934
Miles to steps (miles × 5,280) ÷ stride in feet
Steps per mile 5,280 ÷ stride in feet
Walking stride (feet) height in feet × 0.415
Running stride (feet) height in feet × 0.52
Calories (rough) steps × 0.04 walking, 0.06 running
Time miles ÷ speed in mph

The steps to miles formula at a glance

Step by step: steps to miles

  1. Find your stride in feet. If you only know inches, divide by 12.
  2. Multiply your steps by that stride to get feet.
  3. Divide by 5,280 to get miles.
  4. Multiply by 1.60934 if you want kilometers.

Estimating stride from height

Use height in inches times 0.415 for walking or 0.52 for running, then divide by 12 for feet. These ratios come from average gait measurements, so they fit most adults reasonably well but not everyone perfectly. Compare with the stride length chart.

Worked examples

Example 1: a walker at 5’10”

Stride = 70 × 0.415 = 29.0 in = 2.42 ft. Distance = 8,000 × 2.42 ÷ 5,280 = 3.67 miles (5.90 km).

Example 2: a walker at 5’5″

Stride = 65 × 0.415 = 27.0 in. With 12,000 steps the distance is 5.11 miles.

Example 3: a runner at 5’10”

Running stride = 70 × 0.52 = 36.4 in. Six thousand running steps cover 3.45 miles.

Going the other way: miles to steps

A 5-mile walk for someone with a 28-inch stride needs 5 × 63,360 ÷ 28 = 11,314 steps. For more distances, read the miles to steps calculator guide.

Spreadsheet and code versions

In a spreadsheet with steps in A1 and stride in inches in B1, use =A1*B1/12/5280 for miles. In JavaScript: miles = steps * strideInches / 12 / 5280.

Accuracy notes

  • Height-based stride is an estimate; measured stride is better.
  • Stride changes with speed and terrain.
  • Trackers may count differently, so expect a 5 to 10% gap with GPS.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for converting steps to miles?

Multiply steps by stride length in feet and divide by 5,280.

How do I convert miles to kilometers?

Multiply miles by 1.60934.

How do I estimate stride from height?

Multiply height by 0.415 for walking or 0.52 for running.

Is the calorie formula exact?

No. Steps times 0.04 or 0.06 is a rough average. Body weight and effort change the real figure.
